The Washington Office The ECLAC Washington Office was established in 1950 to serve as liaison with the United States government and international organizations based in Washington, D.C., such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF); the World Bank Group (IBRD); the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB); the Organization of American States (OAS); and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). This includes participation in the OAS-IDB-ECLAC Tripartite Committee, the follow-up mechanism to the Miami Summit of 1994 and, in particular, provision of support to the process of hemispheric trade liberalization. In addition, the Washington Office monitors the evolution and development of the economy of the United States and Canada publishing yearly surveys of these economies. Other reports prepared regularly include analysis of trade barriers, implementation of the North American Free Trade Agreement in the United States and Canada, and trade and investment flows between the U.S. and Latin America and the Caribbean. Finally, ECLAC Washington carries out extensive public information and outreach activities, including lectures, publication of the monthly CEPAL News, distribution of ECLAC documents, and contacts with the Washington-based media. |
